Help support a new project in Sri Lanka

You truly can’t afford not to…

April 5, 2011

My name is Denis Bisson and I joined Habitat GV program because I needed to make a difference. I know your probably thinking to your self how cliché that sounds but read it again, Its not only that I want to make a difference, “I need” to make a difference. I can tell you who I am but it means nothing when I myself am still in search of whom that is. In my past, I feel looking back, I have done nothing but better myself in pursuit of advancing my career, higher education, and living as most...

Summary

Raising funds for a housing project in Sri-Lanka

Among the many people facing housing challenges here are Olga Prethimali and her family. Prethimali runs a small preschool in the village. She is married and has a daughter, who helps her run the preschool while pursuing a college degree from home.

Unfortunately, that home is not well-suited for studying—or living in general. Since losing a house built 25 years ago in the government housing program, the family has lived in a small rental unit. They began building a two-bedroom house on family land they inherited but have had difficulty paying for both their rent and construction costs.

The Solution
Habitat Sri Lanka is working to provide help. Habitat is first providing six families with loans to either complete a house they’ve already begun or to build a new home from scratch. Those families will also receive construction assistance and financial education in the process.

Habitat’s hope in Sri Lanka is to replicate this model to help 100 more families in the region. Healthier homes will mean protection from the elements and a safe, protected environment for mothers and children. It will allow families to turn their attention—and resources—to other educational, medical and professional needs.

For Olga Prethimali’s daughter, it will mean a more ideal environment to study in—and hopefully a better life for herself and her mother.

How you can help
Consider donating to support Habitat Sri Lanka’s project in Negombo, and pass this opportunity on to your friends and family. The more money we raise, the more families we can reach!

We’re starting with an attempt to raise $6,000 to build new homes with six Sri Lankan families.

Your contributions will help fund Habitat Sri Lanka’s ability to supply and transport building materials to families who will build their own better future.

Thank you for supporting this initiative—and the volunteers who are fundraising and traveling to Sri Lanka to help make it happen!
